Quick Start Guide
This guide will help you set up Intelligent Agents in Brightspace to automate reminders, encouragement, and personalized messages to students. These tools support Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) and can increase engagement without adding to your workload.
What is an Intelligent Agent?
An Intelligent Agent is an automated message that Brightspace sends based on certain conditions, like inactivity, missed assignments, or completed tasks. It's a simple way to support students proactively.
Common Use Cases
- Student hasn't logged in for X days
- Missed quiz or assignment
- Encouragement after completing a big module
- Mid-course check-in
Getting Started: Step-by-Step Setup
1. In your Brightspace course, go to 'Course Admin' > 'Intelligent Agents'.
2. Click 'New' to create a new agent.
3. Give your agent a name (e.g., Inactivity Reminder).
4. Under 'Agent is Enabled', check the box.
5. Set your criteria:
6. For inactivity: Use 'Login Activity' or 'Course Activity'.
· For missed work: Use 'Release Conditions' to target specific content.
· Under 'Actions', write your message. Use 'replace strings' to personalize:
· Example: Hello {FirstName}, I noticed you haven’t logged in lately. How can I support you?
7. In the 'To:' field, enter: {InitiatingUser}
8. Check 'Send an Email' and customize the subject and message.
9. Schedule your agent to run daily or weekly.
10. Click 'Save and Close'.
Pro Tips
- Use 'Send Only Once' to avoid repeated messages.
- Add your email to 'Additional Email' to receive a copy of each message.
- You can copy Intelligent Agents into future courses.
- Include your name/email in the message body for replies.

have any questions!
3. Encouragement Message
Subject: Great Work!
Body: You’re making great progress in this course, FirstName}. Keep it up!
